TWENTY BIGGEST STORIES IN 20 YEARS

TWENTY BIGGEST STORIES IN 20 YEARS

JESSICA Soho and Arnold Clavio host GMA Public Affairs’ 20th Anniversary Special listing down the top 20 biggest stories over the past 20 years. Included on the list are stories that opened the eyes of viewers to shocking realities and stories that helped change the nation’s history … stories that now define GMA’s Public Affairs department. Many of these stories, in some way or another, can be traced to Ms. Jessica Soho.

A pioneer of Public Affairs, Jessica was a former host of Kape at Balita, Brigada Siete, I-Witness and Jessica Soho Reports. Yet few realize the impact she has also had behind the cameras. Jessica launched the program Emergency as its first executive producer and it remains one of the highest rating public affairs programs in the country. She also introduced the long-form documentary show I-Witness that has withstood the test of time and now the most internationally awarded show on Philippine TV. I-Witness’ greatest achievement thus far has been winning the George Foster Peabody Award, considered the Oscars of investigative journalism, for the documentaries Kamao and Kidneys for Sale " both written and hosted by Jessica herself.

Arnold Clavio also made a name for himself through GMA’s Public Affairs programs. An assignment for wow defunct morning show Brigada Siete, led to Arnold’s three-week encounter with the Abu Sayyaf. Arnold remembers he brought only two pairs of jeans and a few shirts for the trip – expecting it to last just a couple of days. He had no idea about the danger he was about to face, “I was more fearful of my bosses. If I didn’t deliver a good story, I’d be more at risk,” he says with a laugh. Arnold gave the nation its first look at the members of the Abu Sayyaf through his story. He was also the first to report about the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption. The coverage had him immersing with families who lost everything to the lahar. Arnold continues to face danger and disaster every week as the host of Emergency, does Saksi every night and Unang Hirit every morning.

Jessica and Arnold represent the best of GMA Public Affairs – hosts who could never be considered just armchair journalists. They share their own life-changing experiences as they count down Public Affairs’ biggest, most unforgettable stories in “20: Dalawampung Taon ng GMA Public Affairs” this Sunday, October 28 at 10:30p.m.

FORMER VILLAIN NOW CO-LEAD ACTRESS

WHEN they first did a movie together, Ai Ai de las Alas played villain to Rufa Mae Quinto in “Booba.” Now, Ai Ai gets top billing over Peachy (Rufa Mae) in OctoArts Films’ “Pasukob”, a spoof on the hit horror film, “Sukob”. “Peachy (Rufa Mae) and I are good friends kaya okay lang ‘yun,” she says. “Pantay naman ang roles namin sa ‘Pasukob’ as sisters na nagkahiwalay at hindi alam na magkasukob kami nang ikasal. Siya, kay DJ Durano at ako, kay Antonio Aquitania”

Rufa Mae is still being seen in the hit “Apat Dapat” on its extended run, but she’s confident that “Pasukob” will surpass the success of that flick. “Kasi combination ito ng horror and comedy,” she says. “People who love horror films will surely enjoy the frightening scenes that we spoof here.”

We ask Director Wenn Deramas what scenes from the original “Sukob” did he spoof in “Pasukob” that opens on November 28.

“First is the wedding scene where a death occurs in the kampanaryo,” he says. “We shot it in the belltower of the old church in Nagcarlan, Laguna. Then there’s the ending where one of the sisters had to make a sacrifice to save the other. In ‘Sukob’, parehong handang magsakripisyo sina Kris Aquino at Claudine Barretto for the sake of each other. Dito, sina Ai Ai at Peachy, nagtuturuan kung sino ang dapat magsakripisyo dahil pareho silang ayaw mamatay. But it’s not only ‘Sukob’ that we spoof here but also other horror films like ‘Feng Shui’ and ‘Wag Kang Lilingon’.
